Street Trees

From time to time residents inquire as to what trees may be planted within the public right of way or if they should plant trees there at all. The following is a list of regulations and guidelines for planting in the right of way.

  • Call MISS DIG  at (800) 482-7171 before planting trees in any location.
  • A City permit is required for working in the right of way.
  • Trees planted in the right of way must be at least one (1) inch in diameter.
  • No tree shall be placed so as to cause a traffic hazard.
  • Trees shall be planted at least thirty (30) feet apart.
  • No tree shall be planted where the space between the curb and sidewalk is less than five (5) feet.
  • No tree shall be planted closer than two (2) feet from the curb.
  • Prohibited tree species include:
  • Poplar
  • Box Elder
  • Soft Maple
  • Catalpas
  • Mulberry
  • Cottonwood
  • Before planting any tree in the right of way consider the following:

  • Will it interfere with overhead wires in the future?
  • Will it get sufficient water and care in the right of way?
  • Will branches interfere with traffic view when making turns from driveways or intersections?
  • Will branches be hanging over street/sidewalk causing interference for vehicles/pedestrians?
  • Will tree eventually cause sidewalks to buckle or rise becoming a hazard to anyone using the sidewalk?
  • Having asked yourself these questions, if you have any doubt about the safety or value of planting a tree in the right of way, consider a different location for the tree. If after considering all the previous information, you feel a tree in the right of way is suitable, the following list of street trees are recommended for use in Grandville:
