Additional Comments
CRIMINAL
ACTIVITY:
CRIME INFORMATION:
Most criminal offenses remained at relatively
normal rates of occurrence. Sexual
assaults were up at nine for the quarter compared to five for the
first quarter last year, but down from the twelve in 2004.
Burglaries were down significantly for the quarter compared
to both of the past two years. There
were no robberies during the quarter.
Larceny and retail fraud offenses together were down
slightly. Alert self
initiated activity by patrol officers resulted in arrests on three
separate occasions when officers located people stealing scrap metal
from three different businesses.
On January 6, 2006, three people were arrested for stealing
from the business at 2995 44th Street SW.
On January 14, 2006, two people were arrested for stealing
from 3181 Broadway Avenue SW. On
February 17, 2006, three people were arrested for stealing from 2925
Remico SW.
COMMUNITY POLICING:
Community Policing Officers recognized five area
businesses for their significant cooperation in community policing
activities. Walmart, Out
Back, Meijers, Serv-U-Success, and Younkers all received formal
recognition from the community policing officers for their generous
donations to local community policing projects.
All of those businesses provide funding for projects and
several of them host events at their businesses.
Their cooperation is greatly appreciated by the officers.
TRAFFIC ACTIVITIES:
Traffic accidents were down 23% for the first
quarter compared to last year and 33% compared to 2004.
This is very significant when you consider that accidents
were down 23% for the year during 2005 compared to 2004.
This reflects highly on the planning that was done in
preparation for the commercial growth in the south end of the city.
Traffic violations and warnings were up about 6% compared to
2005 as well.
TRAINING:
Grandville officers
received training on many of the high risk/high liability areas
included in the new Grandville Police Department Procedure Manual.
Eleven of the chapters have been completed.
The remaining two chapters are in draft form and expected to
be distributed in the next several weeks.
The Grandville Police
Department continues to participate with many other police agencies
in the West Michigan Criminal Justice Training Consortium.
During the quarter, the Grandville Police Department hosted a
Field Training class.
MISCELLANEOUS:
A significant amount of
time has been devoted to arranging for contracting for dispatch
services with the City of Wyoming.
An agreement has been reached that should result in
significant savings for both the Cities of Grandville and Wyoming.
At the same time, the service provided should remain at a
high level, and in many ways, may even result in improvements.
Our dispatch center was staffed with only one person at a
time during most hours of the day or night. Most
of the time, staffing was adequate, but when serious incidents
occurred, the staffing level was marginal at best.
The transfer of the dispatch responsibilities to Wyoming
should alleviate staffing concerns and the improved technological
capabilities that will be available, should result in a more
effective police response to many incidents.
This collaboration will help simplify a later transition to a
Kent County Central Dispatch Authority if that becomes a reality at
a later date.
The Grandville Police
Department has also been very involved in a number of collaborative
projects with other area police departments.
The chiefs and the city managers have been meeting regularly
discussing areas of possible collaborations.
Respectfully Submitted,
Vernon L. Snyder,
Chief of Police
