Additional Comments
CRIMINAL ACTIVITY:
The
statistical data above includes one report of homicide or attempt.
Officers from the Grandville Police Department responded to a
suspicious death during the quarter.
The incident involved a four year old drowning in the bath
tub. Many hours were
spent in the course of the follow-up investigation of this death.
Just recently, Kent County Prosecutor Bill Forsyth ruled that
no charges would be filed in this incident.
Grandville
Police also investigated a missing person complaint involving a 55
year old female resident. Many
hours were also devoted to that investigation.
A vehicle owned by the missing person was located at the
Holland State Park. A
joint investigation was conducted with the Ottawa County Sheriff
Department. Unfortunately,
the missing person’s body was located by marine patrol deputies of
the Ottawa County Sheriff Department.
There
were five robberies reported during the quarter.
The Kent County area experienced a rash of robberies of
businesses during the quarter. These
incidents received considerable media attention.
Several patterns were developed during the investigations.
Investigators from all of the local police departments worked
together on these offenses. The
patterns included robberies of grocery stores, party stores, and
motels. While none of
the grocery store and party store robberies had occurred in the City
of Grandville, investigators worked closely with grocery stores in
the City to relay information to assist with the safety of employees
and customers. A
combination of surveillance by both investigators and patrol
officers and the installation of department owned alarms were used.
Grandville did experience one armed robbery at the Comfort
Suites that fit the pattern of motel robberies.
An arrest has been made on that offense.
Grandville
Police officers also investigated a robbery at the Admiral Station.
An arrest has been made in that incident as well.
Larceny and retail fraud cases
combined decreased during the quarter compared to last year.
These offenses account for most of the increase in criminal
activity that has occurred since the commercial development in the
south end of the City. Once
again, most of the retail fraud offenses reported to the police
department involve suspects who have been arrested.
These incidents, even with an efficient system of processing
them, take both patrol and investigator’s time.
TRAFFIC:
The Department recorded one fatal
accident during the quarter at the intersection of Rivertown Parkway
and Potomac Avenue SW. Overall,
accidents for the quarter were down very significantly.
There were 248 reported during the quarter compared to 502
for the same period last year. That
represents a 51% reduction. Tickets
issued were down slightly while verbal warnings were up.
Overall, there was a 13% increase when the two are added
together.
STAFFING:
Officer Rory Allen joined the
Department during the quarter filling one of the two vacant budgeted
positions. Officer Allen
had worked at the Wyoming Police Department for over two years
before starting at Grandville.
COMMUNITY POLICING:
Officer Dave Greco has been
adjusting to his new responsibilities as the Police-School Liaison
Officer. The focus of
this position has been changing somewhat during the school year.
While Dave will still be responsible for working with school
administrators on security related issues and the investigation of
criminal offenses, he will be attempting to spend more of his time
working directly with the students.
He will be trying to spend more time either in the class room
or one on one with students, particularly devoting time to those
students who have demonstrated a history of problems in making wise
choices.
Officer Ken Rosher has been working
alone on the many responsibilities assigned to community policing.
He has done his best to keep up with the many zoning and
neighborhood traffic complaints that he is assigned.
He will be joined in his efforts by Officer Matt Meeuwsen as
soon as Officer Rory Allen
completes the field training program.
Community Policing Officers had
several projects working in the schools during the quarter.
October always includes Halloween safety classes for the
younger students.
The time just before Christmas
always includes the Police-School Liaison Officer accompanying Santa
Claus as he visits the elementary students.
This project could not be completed without the assistance of
City Council Member Ken Gates and his uncanny connection with Santa.
High school business law classes also made their annual visit
to the Department. They
spend the better part of the day getting an overview of how the
Department operates, visiting with the court and probation staff,
and getting a brief opportunity to ride with an officer.
All of these exposures with the students are very well
received by both the students and the officers.
Respectfully Submitted,
Vernon L. Snyder
Chief of Police
