Below you will find our ordinance regarding outside or open burning.

Sec. 21-74. Open burning of trash or garbage prohibited.

(a) The open burning of trash or garbage is prohibited within the city, and no person shall burn any trash or garbage except within an incinerator as provided by section 21-75.

(b) Notwithstanding subsection (a), this article shall not be deemed to prohibit the open burning of charcoal or wood if burned solely for the purpose of preparing food and if burned within a container, utensil, device or campfire pit designed and intended for outdoor cooking.

(Comp. Ords. 1977, §§ 27.172, 27.177; Ord. No. 183, § 2, eff. 8-23-90)

Some tips to keep your neighbors happy and us away from your fire:

  • Yard waste is considered trash. Use charcoal or hardened wood.
  • Monitor your fire for excessive smoke.
  • Keep your fire a reasonable size.
  • Be safe and have fun!
  • Street / Address Numbers

All residential and commercial buildings are required to have address / street numbers visible from the street as outlined in the ordinance below.

    Sec. 23-105. Placement.

    (a) Residential buildings.

    (1) A residential dwelling unit shall have its address number displayed on the front of the building (either on the front door of the dwelling unit or as close to the front door as is practicable) in a manner readily visible and clearly ascertainable from the abutting roadway.

    (2) In addition to the address number displayed on the front of the building as required by subsection (a)(1) of this section, a residential dwelling unit that is either (a) located more than ninety (90) feet from the closest roadway; or (b) located in a manner such that the address number on the front of the building is not readily visible and clearly ascertainable from the closest roadway (due to trees, vegetation, topography, or any other reason), shall also have its address number displayed on a post located not more than ten (10) feet from the roadway right-of-way or on a regulation United States postal service mail box. The post or mail box shall be located on the same side of the roadway as, and directly in front of, the dwelling unit. The address number on the post or mail box shall be readily visible and clearly ascertainable from both directions from the abutting roadway.

    (3) Multifamily residential buildings shall have a building address sign on or at the front of the building that identifies the addresses of all dwelling units located within the building if the addresses of the individual dwelling units are not otherwise required by this article to be displayed on the exterior of the building.

    (b) Nonresidential buildings.

    (1) A principal building used primarily for business or other nonresidential purpose shall have its address number displayed on the front of the building (either on the front entrance of the building or as close to the front door as is practicable), or on a sign directly in front of the building, in a manner readily visible and clearly ascertainable from the abutting roadway.

    (2) In addition to the address number displayed on or in the front of the building as required by subsection (b)(1) of this section, a nonresidential building that is either (a) located more than ninety (90) feet from the closest roadway, or (b) located in a manner such that the address number on the front of the building is not readily visible and clearly ascertainable from the closest roadway (due to trees, vegetation, topography, or any other reason), shall also have its address number displayed on a post or mail box as provided by subsection (a)(2) of this section.

    (3) If a place of business is located in a building common to two (2) or more separate businesses, and the business has, in addition to its front or main entrance, a rear entrance not common to the other businesses and which leads to a hard-surfaced area upon which vehicular traffic may maneuver, the additional entrance shall be separately identified with the address number of the place of business. Further, a building containing two (2) or more separate businesses or building units with separate addresses shall have a building address sign on or at the front of the building that identifies the addresses of all building units located within the building if the addresses of the individual units are not otherwise required by this section to be displayed on the exterior of the building.

    (c) Building units with common entrances. If the front door of a building unit (residential or nonresidential) is not visible from the exterior of the building in which it is located (for example, if the front door is accessible only through an interior corridor or common area), then the building shall have a building address sign on or at the front of the building that identifies the address of the building unit (and any similarly situated building units located within the building) in a manner readily visible and clearly ascertainable from the closest abutting street.

    (d) Variance. If due to the particular circumstances an address number cannot be placed in strict compliance with subsection (a) and (b) above, then the address number shall be located in a manner to be determined by the city fire chief which complies as closely as possible with the purpose and intent of this article and as required by the public health, safety and general welfare.

    (e) Dead-end roadways. Any dead-end roadway located within a complex in which more than one (1) roadway shares a common name (such as an apartment complex, a condominium complex or an industrial site) shall display the address numbers to all the units located on the dead-end roadway within twenty (20) feet of where the dead-end roadway joins the primary roadway in that complex. The address numbers shall be located so as to not block the view of drivers entering and exiting the dead-end street. The numbers shall be located in a manner such that they are readily visible and clearly ascertainable from the primary roadway (due to trees, vegetation, topography, or any other reason).
