Jury Duty

You have just received notice that you have been selected for jury service in the 59th District Court, what should one expect?

What To Expect

1. An informal informational meeting with the judge at the court to explain the process and requirement. This meeting is normally scheduled several weeks prior to the actual trial date. Residents from both Grandville and Walker will be requested to attend this meeting as the 59th District Court covers both of those venues. Jurors would be required to sit at either venue for a jury trial.

2. The term of service is for four (4) months

3. Length of a jury trial may be for ½ day up to 3 days. Typically most last ¾ to 1 full day.

4. Time – a jury trial is usually scheduled to start at 9:00 AM.

5. Jury trials are normally scheduled on Wednesday, Thursday or Fridays.

6. Jurors will be given 12-14 days notice by mail of when and where you need to appear for jury duty.

7. The case you hear may be criminal or civil.

8. Approximately 12-20 jurors will be summoned to appear on the date of trial for selection. Six jurors will be selected to decide the case. If you are not selected, you may be excused for that particular case and you may leave or you may stay and watch the proceedings.

9. If you are scheduled for jury duty and you cannot appear you MUST have the court’s permission to be excused.
