FALL 2005
FROM
THE OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
It is hard for me to remember a more beautiful
summer than we have enjoyed this year.
It’s just unfortunate that it has passed us by so quickly.
Let me begin by expressing my thanks to the
Granville Park & Recreation Board for putting together another
super 4th of July
Celebration. The
fly-by, as we began the parade, will long be remembered.
What a way to begin the celebration.
The evening concert with music provided by Family Traditions
was certainly a fine presentation.
Once again the fireworks were a great way to bring the
celebration to conclusion. A
special word of thanks to RiverTown Crossings Mall, Meijer, Outback
and the City of Grandville for sponsoring the annual fireworks
display.
We are certainly appreciative of your patience
and understanding as we, once again, witnessed a substantial amount
of road construction. It
looks like we are about to bring this to a conclusion, with the
exception of the Prairie project which will extend from Ivanrest
east to our City limits.
The restroom facility for Calvin Crest Park is
nearing completion and that will certainly be a major improvement to
the park. Once again,
the City and the Grandville Little League have partnered so that we
will continue to see new fencing and backstops for two more of the
Little League fields. The
bike trail in Mill Race Park is also scheduled to be resurfaced and
that will be another welcome addition.
The final version of the new Grandville Parks
& Recreation Master Plan has been reviewed and approved by the
Grandville Parks & Recreation Board.
It is now available for public comment.
Once that period has expired, the public hearing will be held
at a Grandville City Council meeting.
Once it is approved by the Council, it will be forwarded to
the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in Lansing.
After it is approved by the DNR, the City will be eligible to
apply for available grants to help fund projects that are included
in the Master Plan. We
look forward to bringing this project
to a conclusion.
The past several months has witnessed
substantial progress in the completion of our newest restaurant, the
Red Robin. Further to
the west, the new Harold Zieglar, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep Dealership is
nearing completion. We
look forward to welcoming both of these businesses to Grandville in
the latter part of 2005. As
you travel Rivertown Parkway, you’ll notice the major remodeling
that has taken place at the site of the old Harlo building.
We are certainly pleased to welcome to Grandville, the US
Storage Depot.
Be sure to mark your calendars. The annual
Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held on Monday, the 5th of
December at 7:00 p.m. at the Grandville Library.
This is another of our great traditions and always marks the
official beginning of the Christmas season.
It was a “super” summer – we
sure enjoyed all the amenities of Grandville.
As we move into the fall season, we extend our best wishes
for a successful football season for the Squires and the Bulldogs.
Enjoy!

HISTORICAL
COMMISSION
The Historical
Commission extends sincere condolences to the family of Marilyn
DeVries, our very well-liked and able President. Marilyn passed away
unexpectedly since the last newsletter edition.
A tireless worker, she will be sorely missed.
It is not a hard
thing to become a member of the Historical Commission and the duties
do not take a whole lot of time.
We take turns hosting museum open houses and at the #10
Schoolhouse when the classes come in the spring.
Our museum is always open on the first Thursday of each month
from 1:00 – 4:00 P.M. The
museum and school house are both also open by special request.
Historical Commission meetings
are on the third Monday night of the month in the lower level of
City Hall at 7:00 p.m. All
are welcome.
Great Holiday gift
items are available in our Museum.
We have in stock special glasses, cups, our history book, Bend
in the River, note paper, historic tiles and copies of pictures.
It has been a busy
summer. We have shown
three families through the Schoolhouse and we are so very thankful
to have had many visitors in our Museum.
A person from Arizona was looking for her grandfather who had
lived in Grandville. We
found a school picture with him in it for her.
Another family, visiting for a family reunion, with members
from as far away as Florida and California who attended #10 School
visited. It was so much
fun to go back in time and reminisce.
A ramp was recently
installed at #10 School so our disabled students and friends can
conveniently visit. A
set of original Palmer Method letters for the schoolhouse was
donated by Melissa
Eefsting of Allendale. We
were so happy to receive them and added them to the front of our
classroom. We also now
have small chalkboards on each desk for the students to write on
just as if they were in the 1800’s.
Please come and
visit us. You will have
a wonderful experience!

GRANDVILLE
POLICE BEAT
National
Night Out was celebrated on August 2, 2005.
Community Policing Officers coordinated nine block parties
that evening. Several of
the parties had close to 100 participants.
This event provides a great opportunity for people to get to
know their neighbors. Crime
prevention starts with residents knowing what is normal in their
neighborhoods and reporting suspicious activities to the police.
The Grandville Fire Department also attended all of the
parties. The 90 degree
temperatures made the fire trucks spraying the kids very popular.
The
July 4 celebration was highly attended again this year.
The weather was perfect and everyone seemed to enjoy the many
activities. A lot of
people devote many hours to putting on this activity.
Almost the entire staff of the Grandville Police Department
ends up with some type of assignment in making this event possible.
The
Grandville Police Department recently participated in a media event
concerning “Airsoft” firearms.
These weapons look exactly like real firearms, only they
shoot a small plastic pellet. Recently
manufactured airsoft products come with an orange band around the
barrel in an attempt to differentiate them from real weapons.
There is a very real danger when these weapons are used or
displayed in public or carried concealed on a person or in a
vehicle. Police officers
and the public are unable to discern these toys from real weapons
leading to confrontations between the officers and those with the
toys. Some of the people
possessing these weapons have either removed or painted over the
orange ring, making them look even more real.
If your child has one of these toys, please make certain that
they do not play with them in public, and if they have removed or
painted over the orange ring, either destroy or repair the airsoft
weapon. There have been
numerous close calls in the area in which officers have almost used
lethal force when confronting someone with one of these toys.
Responses to calls from the public when these weapons have
been displayed in public tie up police personnel who are then unable
to respond to actual emergencies.
Please help us avoid a tragedy.

Winter News
Parking
Regulations
Our winter
parking ordinance prohibits parking on the public streets or
municipally regulated parking lots between the hours of 2:00 AM and
8:00 AM, from December 1, 2005 through the following March 31, 2006.
Snowplowing
The Grandville
Department of Public Works is dedicated to keeping your streets well
maintained. Remember not to shovel or blow snow into the street.
Place your trash container on your driveway between the
sidewalk and the curb, not in the street or on the sidewalk.
Retrieve your container as soon as possible after pickup. The Public
Works Department does not clear driveways and cannot avoid throwing
snow back into your driveway when they are clearing streets. Thank
you for your patience during our long hard winters.
We also plow a
sidewalk school and major street route that accommodates most
children walking to school.
We again ask, please, keep your trash container off the
sidewalk if you are on this route.
If you have special landscaping next to the sidewalk it
should be marked at the edge of the sidewalk with reflective stakes.
Sprinkler heads can also be marked with these reflective
stakes.
Christmas Tree Pickup
Christmas Tree
Pickup is scheduled for January 9, 2006 and January 10, 2006.
Pickup for South of Buck Creek is on Monday January 9.
Pickup for North of Buck Creek is on Tuesday January 10.
Please have your tree at the curb, on top of any existing
snow, in plain view on the morning of your pickup day.
The city is not responsible for trees left at the curb after
January 9 and 10.
DPW Emergency Response
The Department of
Public Works is available to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day,
7 days a week. During
regular office hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM) call
538-1990. After hours
