CITY OF GRANDVILLE

REGULAR CITY COUNCIL MEETING

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2011

 

The Grandville City Council Regular Meeting of December 12, 2011 was called to order by Mayor James Buck at 7:00 pm.

 

Present were Council Members Randal Gelderloos, Steve Kauffman, Steve Maas, Joshua Meringa, Carole Pettijohn, Dick Richards and Mayor James Buck.  Absent:  None

 

Also attending:  Matthew Butts, Assistant City Manager; Tammy Hopman, Finance Director; Matt Zimmerman, City Attorney; Ken Krombeen, City Manager; Mary Meines, City Clerk; and Dennis Santo, Police Chief.

 

Rev. David Crompton of Grandville Baptist Church delivered the invocation; and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Motion made by Council Member Maas, supported by Council Member Meringa, to approve the December 12, 2011 agenda as presented. The motion was APPROVED.

 

Motion made by Council Member Meringa, supported by Council Member Richards, to waive the reading of the minutes of the Regular Meeting of November 28, 2011 and to approve as presented.  The motion was APPROVED.   

 

Motion made by Council Member Pettijohn, supported by Council Member Gelderloos, that bills for Fiscal Year 2011-2012 totaling $187,051.54 as presented by the City Manager, be allowed and authorize the Treasurer to pay the same. The motion was unanimously APPROVED by a roll call vote.

 

PUBLIC COMMENT

A ribbon cutting ceremony for Homes for Heroes was held at the fire station on December 5.  Ken Ghent of Greenridge Realty is the local affiliate for Homes for Heroes in Kent and Ottawa Counties.  He briefly explained that the Homes for Heroes program provides discounts on real estate and related services for military personnel and other public servants. 

 

Russ Ripma, 3965 Johnson Lane, on behalf of the Grandville Senior Neighbors, invited the community to Family Fun night on Tuesday, December 13.

 

ORDINANCE AND RESOLUTIONS

Matthew Butts presented a request to rezone property at 2980 44th St from I-1, Industrial District to PUD, Planned Unit Development.  The property, if rezoned, will be added to the existing PUD for the adjoining property.  An existing industrial building would be demolished and replaced according to site plan.  The Planning Commission has unanimously recommended approval.  Nick Koster of CWD Real Estate commented briefly on the plan.  Motion made by Council Member Maas, supported by Council Member Meringa to introduce Ordinance 281-D.  The motion was unanimously APPROVED by roll call vote. 

Motion made by Council Member Meringa, supported by Council Member Richards to table Ordinance 281-D.  Motion CARRIED. 

 

CONSENT AGENDA

Items presented under the Consent Agenda included:

1.      Reports:  Fire/EMS (November), Treasurer’s (November)

2.      Minutes: Park and Recreation (December 1)

 

Motion made by Council Member Maas, supported by Council Member Meringa, to approve the Consent Agenda as presented.  The motion was APPROVED.

 

COUNCIL COMMENTS

·         The next City Council meeting is scheduled be held on Monday, December 19

·         Thanks were offered by Council Member Richards to the DDA for their efforts with regard to self-bonding the Streetscape project – he indicated he is in support of the project

·         Welcome to the newly appointed Senior Neighbors director, Kimberly Van Dis

·         Santa and his reindeer will be at the Library on Thursday night, December 15 at 6:30

·         Thanks to those who helped with the Christmas Tree Lighting, particularly the third graders

·         Suggestion by Council Member Kauffman  to expand the size of the DDA in light of the number of applicants and the upcoming Streetscape construction

·         Grandville-Jenison Chamber of Commerce meeting held at Sunnybrook Country Club offered the opportunity for the mayor to comment on recent improvements to Grandville

·         Homes for Heroes welcomed

·         Ribbon cutting held at Uccello’s

·         Quarterly luncheon for the Grand Valley Metro Council will be held on January 9 at the Prince Conference Center with Birgit Klohs speaking

 

ADJOURNMENT

Motion made by Council Member Maas, supported by Council Member Richards, to adjourn at 7:34 pm.  The motion was APPROVED.
