CITY OF GRANDVILLE
REGULAR CITY COUNCIL MEETING
MONDAY, AUGUST 11, 2008
The
Grandville City Council Regular Meeting of August 11, 2008 was
called to order by Mayor Pro Tem Carole Pettijohn at 7:00 pm.
The
City Clerk called the roll. Present were Council Members Ken Gates,
Steve Maas, Joshua Meringa, Carole Pettijohn, and Stan Ponstein.
Absent: Council Member Randal Gelderloos and Mayor James Buck.
Also
attending: Tammy Aue, Treasurer/Finance Directory; Matthew Butts,
Assistant City Manager; Randy Kraker, City Attorney; Kenneth
Krombeen, City Manager; Mary Meines, City Clerk; and Dennis Santo,
Police Chief.
Representative David Agema gave the invocation; and was followed by
the Pledge of Allegiance.
Motion made by Council Member Maas, supported by Council Member
Gates, to approve the August 11, 2008 agenda as provided. The motion
was APPROVED.
Motion made by Council Member Maas, supported by Council Member
Gates, to waive the reading of the minutes of the Regular Meeting of
July 28, 2008 and to approve as presented. The motion was APPROVED.
Motion made by Council Member Gates, supported by Council Member
Maas, that Fiscal Year 2007-2008 bills totaling $513,610.61 as
presented by the City Manager, be allowed and authorize the
Treasurer to pay the same. The motion was unanimously APPROVED by
roll call vote.
Motion made by Council Member Gates, supported by Council Member
Meringa, that Fiscal Year 2008-2009 bills totaling $196,834.73 as
presented by the City Manager, be allowed and authorize the
Treasurer to pay the same. The motion was unanimously APPROVED by
roll call vote.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
David
Agema, State Representative for the 74th District, discussed

per capita revenue sharing; and
·
questions that were asked Michigan universities re:
same-sex/unmarried benefits and what system is in place to prevent
illegal aliens from getting in-state tuition assistance.

Motion made by Council Member Maas, supported by Council Member
Gates, to approve the Consent Agenda as presented. The motion was
APPROVED.
CITY MANAGER’S REPORT
Assistant City Manager Butts reviewed a policy regarding cell
phones. He indicated the policy was drafted to reflect the IRS
ruling requiring cell phones be taxed as a personal benefit. Motion
made by Council Member Gates, supported by Council Member Meringa,
to approve the Cell Phone Policy as presented. The motion was
unanimously APPROVED by roll call vote.
Motion made by Council Member Maas, supported by Council Member
Gates, to excuse Council Member Gelderloos and Mayor Buck. The
motion was APPROVED.

RECESS TO EXECUTIVE SESSION
Motion made by Council Member Ponstein, supported by Council Member
Maas, to recess at 7:27 pm to executive session for purposes of
collective bargaining. The motion was unanimously APROVED by roll
call vote.
RETURN TO REGULAR SESSION
Returned to regular session at 8:27 pm.
Motion made by Council Member Maas, supported by Council Member
Gates, to ratify the 2008-2011 collective bargaining agreement with
the POLC Sergeants Division. The motion was unanimously APPROVED by
roll call vote.
ADJOURNMENT
Motion made by Council Member Ponstein, supported by Council Member
Gates, to adjourn at 8:29 pm. The motion was APPROVED.
