PROCEEDINGS OF THE
GRANDVILLE CITY COUNCIL
Regular session, April 8, 2002, in the
Council Chambers at 7:00 p.m.
The meeting was called to order by Mayor James
Buck.
The City Clerk called the roll. Present were
Council Members Robert De Witt, Ken Gates, Steve Maas, Carole
Pettijohn, Stan Ponstein, Joe Sierawski and Mayor Buck.
Absent: None
Also present were City Manager Ken Krombeen and
City Attorney Eugene Alkema.
Other staff present:
Mike Chesher, DPW Director
Tom Guinther, Treasurer/Finance Director
Mary Meines, City Clerk
Dick Meyers, WWTP Superintendent
Vern Snyder, Police Chief
Harvey Veldhouse, Fire Chief
The invocation was given by Rev. Douglas Van
Bronkhorst, First Reformed Church, and was followed by the Pledge of
Allegiance.
Moved by Council Member Gates and seconded by
Council Member Maas, CARRIED, to approve the April 8, 2002 agenda.
Moved by Council Member De Witt and seconded by
Council Member Sierawski, CARRIED, to waive the reading of the
minutes of the regular meeting of March 25, 2002 and approve as
presented.
Moved by Council Member Gates and seconded by
Council Member Maas, CARRIED unanimously by roll call vote, that
bills totaling $368,851.41, as presented by the City Manager, be
allowed and the Treasurer authorized to pay the same.
PUBLIC COMMENT
Bill Cheevers, Principal at East Elementary
School, introduced the Student Council. He stated because of
parental and community support they have been awarded the Blue
Ribbon Award, which recognizes their achievements in academic
programs. He indicated the school was honored at a ceremony in
Washington, D.C. last fall. Motion by Council Member Gates and
seconded by Council Member Pettijohn, CARRIED, to remove from the
Consent Agenda the adoption of a proclamation recognizing East
Elementary School. Motion by Council Member Gates and seconded by
Council Member Maas, CARRIED, to authorize a proclamation
recognizing April 15-19, 2002 as East Elementary Blue Ribbon Week in
the City of Grandville.
Paul De Leeuw from WCET made a presentation of a
new introduction to the Grandville City Council meeting videos.
CONSENT AGENDA
Motion by Council Member Gates, seconded by Council Member
Pettijohn, CARRIED, to remove from the Consent Agenda authorization
for repair of a sanitary sewer line.

Moved by Council Member De Witt and seconded by
Council Member Maas, CARRIED, to approve the Consent Agenda as
presented.
CITY MANAGER’S REPORT
Public Works Director Chesher requested
authorization to make emergency repairs to a sanitary sewer line in
Cedar Creek Street. He indicated a gas main passed through the
sanitary sewer pipe and was obstructing the flow. Motion by Council
Member Gates, seconded by Council Member Sierawski, CARRIED
unanimously by roll call vote, to authorize the emergency repair of
the sanitary sewer line in Cedar Creek Street.
COUNCIL MEMBERS COMMENTS
Mayor Buck commented on the budget work session
and the Kent County Regional Meeting to be held on May 7, 2002 at
Grandville City Hall.
ADJOURNMENT
Moved by Council Member Gates and seconded by
Council Member Maas, CARRIED to adjourn at 7:30 p.m.
